George,
It's good to hear from you it has been a long time. Thank you for sharing your comments. Yes, after over 30 years of being in the Longhorn business I have gotten tired of the game playing but I love and believe in this great breed and that is what keeps me going. Most of the people are good folks, just a few bad apples that are not in it for they cattle. Our breed has a place in the "real cattle world" but both of our associations are focused on promoting one non-functional trait instead of all the great traits that our breed has to offer. I still have a select group of registered cattle but my money markers are my Longhorns that I have bred to Angus bulls. You are right about cattlemen not taking our breed seriously and that is thanks to folks that make it look like it is ALL about horn only and the non-realistic prices they are willing to pay for horn. Again Good to Hear from you.

Russell you are a good man and I often wonder if you ever tired of the the game so many play in the longhorn business. In truth cattle are a food source and worth what they bring in that market. Just like angus, herford ect. Well there is a market for the ropers, a real market. But I watched with dismay as other wise honest men loaded auctions in order to trick unsupecting new buyers into paying inflated and unreal prices for our longhorns. I enjoyed the beauty of the critters as much as any one but could not abide the dishonesty. I remember men considered marketing experts taking the position that the truth did not matter, it was the spin put on it. I was discredited because I believe truth had a place in the longhorn business. I was told not to ask too many questions because people would rather believe fantasy rather than honesty.
I am happy to see people still raising longhorns because they are as much of our history as the cowboy. But then again there are folks that would have you believe worms and long neck birds had a tremendous value as well. I live in the real cattle world these days and the longhorn breeders are laughed at because of their games.
Anyway good to see you still around and you are one of those I respected.

Absolutely agree that predictable and proven genetics are the smartest & most cost effective way to go. Like begets like and its a good bet that a bull's daughters will favor his dam. Even though great A.I. sires are always appreciated we believe the greatest influence and power in our program comes from "Cow Power". And the results were not only predicted on paper because of concentrated proven genetics but now we see the amazing and consistent results. Genetics is a wonderful thing -both art & science and we are always learning. Thanks for the info Russell.

I am so sorry that you find the truth so offensive. I have dedicated over 24 years to the Longhorn industry and that is where I will continue to focus my time and energy. As to Honesty and Character...one is offten judged (rightly or wrongly) by the company that they keep that is why I choose not to be friends with a person that has stolen funds from the good people of the TLBAA because it brings one's character and honesty into question. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us but I do wish you could have done it without resulting to name calling.

Regarding Don King and Zech Dameron, how very sad you have fabricated such lies. The Longhorn breeders I have the privilege of knowing are honest, upstanding individuals whose main interest is supporting the breed. Zech Dameron most certainly falls into that category. You are the most self-serving weasel in the barnyard. If you are so desperate for attention, may I suggest you focus your energy and time on endeavors that reflect honesty and character.

If you would like to see Mr. Lewis' letter in it's great lenght I would suggest that you contact him directly(his contact info is listed in the TLBAA Directory and in the Trails) and ask him to send it to you. If it had been drief and to the point instead of long and rambling I would have been able to post it.

Would like to see Mr. Lewis' entire letter. Doesn't seem fair that the TLBAA Chairman's rebuttal letter is provided but Mr. Lewis' full letter isn't.

I always wait until the calves are about 6-7 mos. before weaning. If the mom will let you or if you can separate the calf from the mom for a few hours each day you can work on halter training the calf earlier than weaning or without weaning. Hope this helps. Russell

Hello,

What would you say the earliest is to wean a heifer from her mom? We are working with & training a bottle fed bull (8wks) & have a heifer (6wks) that we would like to start working with on halter training before sh gets too big.

Standing by for your reply, TR

Anita,
I am glade you visited my website. Thanks for your comments. I would like to know your answers to the She's A 10 survey. The Lucy Creek program has produce any World Show Champions and I think your answers to the survey could be helpful to our newer breeders. You can email you answers to me and I'll post them along with a photo of your idea cow. Thanks.
